Egypt's investment allure tarnished as protests challenge reforms

Egypt’s reputation as an emerging market star lost some of its sparkle last month when street protests revealed a population yet to benefit from years of economic reforms that had impressed investors. That reality check may prove to be uncomfortable.

Our data shows an increasing number of EM investors allocating capital towards Egyptian equities, with just over 28% of the 196 GEM funds in our analysis with exposure. In fact, it is the largest overweight in the MENA region.
